From Oct. 28, 2006 till next entry This is the second little peek into our abode...
Saturday, Oct. 28 We drove with Lassi and Silja to the Cave of Agia Sophia. It is situated quite high in the breast of the mountain, so climbing there is a nice bit of deep-breathing. The cave has a history as a sheltered refuge and stronghold for the Cretan partisans during World War II. From that high point they could easily sharp-shoot any nazis trying to approach the valley. By sheer accident we visited the cave on the Greek holiday to commemorate Greece joining World War II. The cave is also an orthodox church, but used only once a year to echo the message of the Easter to the surrounding valleys and mountains!
Kiti and I have visited that exciting place quite a few times over the years, but it was about 15 years since Lassi's last visit. And Silja is a newcomer to Agia Sophia.
The cave with its stalagtites and stalagmites is one big echo-chamber giving a new dimension to the sounds of the pidgeons nestling somewhere high in the ceiling... From Agia Sofia we drove on to the legendary village of Milia. But that's another story... [ If you see only this frame, click here to see the complete diary ] |
