April 7, 2007 (continued) Easter Saturday ![]() The Paraskevi church, in the center of Kalyves, is getting to be totally crowded at 10 p.m. before the ceremony. ![]() After the ceremony, at about mid-night, the village square is packed with people. ![]() Candles are being lit. ![]() And more candles are being lit before the candle-lighted procession to the beach where one Judas dummy is to be put into flames. The lent is over, and a celebration is to begin. ![]() But, ofcourse, the firing of guns must happen to make the moment memorable. (The little thing in the man's hand is a revolver! - You'll see it if you enlarge the picture by clicking it.) This fellow blasted two full rounds from his revolver - just some feets behind Hannu's ear. But no worry, Hannu has his hearing still as intact as it was before (which is not a great bit). ![]() By now the mass of villagers, coming from the mass, have lit their candles, and are heading to the bonfire on the beach. BTW. Again the village president gave us a helping hand. He cut his candle in half to give something to Kiti since we were, again, empty-handed. ![]() And there is the Judas dummy to be sacrificed into the flames - so that the lent is totally over, and carnivourous celebration is to begin. ![]() Here's a closer view of the demise of the dummy Judas. ![]() We spent the night till 5 a.m. listening to him and his band in O GIALOS on the beach in Kalyves. Please note the notes at the foot of the musician. That is an old Greek custom to make the musicians to go on into the wee hours! [ If you see only this frame, click here to see the complete diary ] |
